SLEEP APNOEA WORKSHOP

Tuesday 21st May, 6.30pm (for7pm) till 9pm

Apollo Hotel Charlestown

Sleep and circadian disorders are increasingly recognised as prevalent in Australia, with serious health, societal and economic consequences. Common disorders include obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)and insomnia. Service provision for these two conditions is a potential role for pharmacy. In the case of OSA, pharmacists can provide services through the continuum from screening to ongoing management. Similarly in the case of insomnia, current evidence suggests that behavioural treatments are as effective as sedatives and certainly safer.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

·      Describe the physiological complexity of sleep – through an understanding of models describing the natural sleep drive as well as through sleep/wake centres in the central nervous system

·      Understand the implications of sleep and sleep deprivation

·      Be aware of prevalent sleep disorders and the pathophysiology, treatment and issues in treatment

·      Understand the basis of chronotherapy as a concept

·      Describe the need for pharmacy to play a role in sleep health
